The Perfect Place to Work on Your Short Game

I have played Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort's Magee Championship Course many times, but I must confess, I have not paid much attention to their Par Three Short Course.

As part of my Academy Membership at Black Bear, I can play this par 3 course as much as I want. The Academy membership also gives me unlimited use of the practice areas and two driving ranges, a one-on-one coaching session from a CPGA Pro each month, and one round on the 18-hole Magee Championship Course per month.

Great Practice and Great Exercise

On a recent visit to Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort, I hit balls at the driving range for about one hour and spend another three quarters of an hour chipping and putting on the practice green behind the driving range.

After that, I played the nine-hole par three Academy Short Course that is located close to the driving range as well.

This is a walking only course, so I loaded my golf bag onto my golf cart and put the clubs I wouldn’t be needing into the car to lighten the load.

The landscape is relatively flat which makes this short par three course a pleasant one-hour stroll through the countryside. Extra time would be needed if you are playing with others.

More Practice Needed

Having just spent one hour at the driving range, you would think that I’d be hitting most of the greens with my tee shots, right?

Wrong, I was "pin-high" quite a bit, but I seemed to be a bit directionally challenged. Apparently one hour at the driving range was not enough.

This great little par three course can tease you with an exhilarating close-to-the-pin, tap in birdie on one hole, and then thrust you into disaster with a double-bogey on the very next hole. The thrills of victory or the agonies of defeat are waiting for you at each hole.

Here is a photo of each hole to give you a sense of what this short par three course looks like. Most photos were taken from the tee blocks facing the green. Other were taken from the green facing back towrards the tee blocks.

The green fees to play Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort’s Academy Short Par Three course is only $30.00 plus HST per golfer.

It can be played for less than $30 if you are tacking it onto an 18-hole round at the Magee Championship Course.

Make It a Full Day at Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort

Wouldn't it be fun to spend the better part of a day at a golf course? Consider it a day at the spa but, in this case, the spa is a very nice golf course.

An Ideal Day at Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort:

  • One hour on the Driving Range

  • Forty-five minutes chipping and putting

  • One hour at Black Bear's restaurant & bar for lunch

  • After lunch, play 18 holes on the Magee Championship Course

Sounds like the perfect day to me!
