Bay of Quinte & PEC: Ontario’s Best-Kept Secret for Golf & Getaways
Retirement offers the luxury of flexibility, especially when it comes to travel. Midweek golf getaways provide a break from routine and come with the perks of quieter courses, lower green fees, and more tee time availability.
The Bay of Quinte and Prince Edward County region in southeastern Ontario is the perfect destination for such escapes, featuring scenic courses, many short-term accommodation options, rural charm, and good old Canadian hospitality.
Option 1: Picton-Based Itinerary
The Prince Edward County option is great for those who want to explore some wineries, breweries, or the beaches after golf.
The accommodation I picked for Option 1 is The Picton Harbour Inn. It's located next to Picton Bay and a short walk to downtown Picton, where you will find many great restaurants. One place that I love visiting in downtown Picton is the Acoustic Grill. Their burgers are amazing, and they have live entertainment starting at 7:00 PM several times a week. You will love this place, trust me.
Don’t forget to have at least one breakfast in The Picton Harbour Inn’s famous breakfast stop, Lighthouse Restaurant, regarded by locals as the best place to get breakfast in The County.
Stay: Picton Harbour Inn
Nestled by the water, this inn offers comfortable lodging with picturesque views, making it a perfect base for golfing adventures.
Located north of Belleville, Black Bear Ridge is renowned for its well-maintained fairways and challenging layout. Golfers have praised its "spectacular conditioning" and "beautiful scenery," making it a must-play in the region.
I have played Black Bear many times and can’t wait to get back out for another round. Make sure you arrive at least one hour before your tee time. Black Bear has the nicest driving range and practice areas in the region.
Don’t go rushing off after your round. Black Bear has a great patio restaurant overlooking hole No. 9 and the tee blocks for hole No. 1.
This course offers a blend of challenge and beauty, with well-groomed fairways and greens. Players appreciate its friendly atmosphere and the helpful staff.
This is another great course that I love to play. Ideal golf course for walkers. Some fairways are tight. If you hit your ball into the woods, good luck finding it.
Picton Golf Course has a restaurant called The View, with a balcony overlooking No. 18 green and the Bay of Quinte. This is a perfect place to grab a bite to eat and a cool beverage and do a little post-round analysis of your scorecard.
For the 2025 season, Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club offers an 18-hole Black Course and a 9-hole Old Course. Well known for its excellent condition and welcoming environment, this is another course you’ll want to include in your golf getaway to the Quinte region.
If you want a bite to eat before the trip home, XIX Restaurant + Patio, right at Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club, would be an excellent choice. I have tested it many times – the food and service are great.
Option 2: Belleville-Based Itinerary
I picked Belleville’s TownePlace Suites as a great place to stay because it is a relatively new hotel, and all rooms have a well-equipped kitchen. It is conveniently located close to Hwy 401 & 62, the Quinte Mall, and many restaurants and fast food outlets.
Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but the TowneSuites is right beside a Shorelines Casino.
If you are staying at the TowneSuites and want to eat in your room but don’t feel like cooking, I’ve got you covered. Check out my story, Top Five Takeout Spots in Belleville – My Personal Favourites for Hungry Golfers.
Offering modern amenities and convenient access to local attractions, this hotel ensures a comfortable stay during your golfing trip.
Day 1: Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort
As highlighted earlier, this course's exceptional maintenance and layout make it a standout choice for golfers seeking a memorable round.
Reiterating its appeal, this course's lush greens and friendly atmosphere provide a delightful golfing experience.
Day 3: Trillium Wood Golf Club
Known for its mature trees, large greens, and picturesque ponds, Trillium Wood offers a challenging yet enjoyable round. I have played this course many times. It is a great golf course for walkers, not too hilly at all.
As you approach hole No. 18, you will smell the pizzas cooking in a wood-fired pizza oven on the patio at Bosco Restaurant & Bar. Bosco’s patio overlooks hole No. 18 green. Make sure they cut your pizza into eight slices. You don’t want your foursome getting into a food fight, right?
