We have to stop demanding that actors and athletes, who are known not for brilliant analysis but are entertainers, not only hold opinions on politics, but also share our own beliefs.
It's not realistic and it's not what they're good at.
Let entertainers and athletes be who they are in their specialties and don't expect nor demand more from them.
I don't expect Wayne Gretzky nor Travis Kelce to agree with me and neither should you. I don't care what Taylor Swift or Ryan Gosling think about anything.
Being rich and famous doesn't give them any particular insight into complicated questions outside their fields.
I respect your point of view and agree with what you are saying when times are relatively normal. Right now, things aren’t even close to normal. There’s a monster at the helm, and he must be stopped. We need our heroes to step up. Look at Bruce Springsteen, now there’s a hero.
Trump will be constrained by the unpopularity of failed tariff policies and by the Supreme Court. Consider yourself lucky to live in a country that actually has brakes on presidential power. No such limits exist for majority Prime Ministers in Canada. Party discipline and whipped votes make majority parliaments completely unconstrained for years at a time.
Hockey stars and singers typically do not know this. Most of the time, when our "heroes" "step up" to comment on politics, they are revealed to be unthoughtful, emotional, poorly read musicians or actors, because that is what they usually are. There are enough grandiose, emotional actors commenting on politics without the jocks getting involved too. All of Hollywood loudly endorsed Hillary Clinton. Maybe the jocks, unlike the actors, are smart enough to stay in their lane?
UK commentator Jonathan Pie summed it up beautifully in 2016:
Well said Richard!
