As you settle into your favourite chair to watch the 90th Masters on TV, it’s easy to get swept up in the perfection of the broadcast. Everything at Augusta National looks so perfect. The grass is a vibrant green, the water is a deep, shimmering blue, and the birds seem to be singing in high definition on every hole.

It’s enough to make any golfer wonder if they’re looking at a real golf course or a Hollywood set. Over the years, this level of curated beauty has given rise to a series of urban legends that fans debate every April. Some are pure fiction, but as you’ll see, the truth behind how they pull off the "Augusta Magic" is often more fascinating than the myths themselves.

1. The Myth of the “Fake” Bird Songs

The Myth: Augusta National pipes in recordings of bird songs through hidden speakers to ensure the atmosphere sounds like a Disney movie.

The Reality: While bird aficionados have occasionally flagged “out-of-place” calls on television broadcasts (like a Canyon Wren that doesn’t live in Georgia), the birds on the course are very real. The club is a former nursery and an Audubon International Certified Sanctuary. However, it is a common practice for broadcast networks to use high-fidelity microphones near bird nests or to subtly layer ambient “nature” tracks to mask the sound of distant mowers or idling television trucks. So, while the birds are real, the volume you hear at home might be a little “enhanced.”

2. The Myth of the Green Paint

The Myth: Grounds crews spray-paint the fairways and brown patches green to ensure the course looks perfect for the cameras.

The Reality: This one is mostly true. While the club doesn’t “paint the course” in a literal sense, they do use turf colourant or pigments to touch up dormant areas or stressed patches of grass. They also use green sand to fill in fairway divots so they don’t show up as white or brown spots on high-definition broadcasts. Even the iconic Hogan Bridge is topped with artificial turf to ensure it stays a consistent, camera-ready green.

3. The Myth of the “Heated” Greens

The Myth: Augusta has an underground heating system beneath the greens to control the growth of the grass and keep it from frosting.

The Reality: While they don’t exactly “heat” the greens, they do have a sophisticated “SubAir” system. This network of pipes beneath the putting surfaces can suck moisture out of the soil or blow air in to regulate temperature and oxygen levels. This allows the greens to remain incredibly firm and fast, even after a heavy Georgia rainstorm.

4. The Myth of the Blue Water

The Myth: Rae’s Creek and the various ponds are naturally that deep, brilliant blue.

The Reality: The water is actually treated with a food-grade dark dye. This isn’t just for aesthetics; the dye prevents sunlight from reaching the bottom of the ponds, which inhibits the growth of algae and weeds. The dark tint also creates that signature mirror-effect, perfectly reflecting the white bunkers and the pink azaleas for those iconic Sunday afternoon shots.

5. The Myth of the “Forever” Green Jacket

The Myth: Once you win The Masters, the Green Jacket is yours to keep forever.

The Reality: You only get to take the jacket home for one year. After your “reign” as the defending champion ends, the jacket must be returned to the club, where it remains in a dedicated locker. From that point on, you are only permitted to wear it when you are physically on the grounds of Augusta National.

The only person to ever successfully “kidnap” his jacket was Gary Player, who “forgot” to bring it back in 1962 and famously told the club chairman, “If you want it, come and get it.” (They let him keep it, provided he never wore it in public).

6. The Myth of the "Iced" Azaleas

The Myth: If a warm spring threatens to make the azaleas bloom too early, the grounds crew packs the roots in ice to "freeze" them in time for tournament week.

The Reality: This is pure golf lore. While Augusta has an incredible horticulture team, they haven’t found a way to stop a 28°C Georgia day from doing its thing. If the blooms are gone, they’re gone. The club simply relies on planting dozens of different varieties—some that bloom early and some that bloom late—to ensure there is almost always a splash of pink or white somewhere on the property. If you see a perfectly blooming bush during a particularly hot year, it’s not because of ice or silk; it’s likely just a late-blooming variety that finally got its moment in the sun.

And Finally, What About That Music We Keep Hearing?

Everyone knows that piano melody that we hear as coverage segways into a commercial break. The piece you hear is titled “Augusta.” It was composed by singer-songwriter Dave Loggins (third cousin of Kenny Loggins) in 1981. While we almost always hear the gentle, piano-heavy instrumental version, Loggins originally wrote it with full lyrics. Here is Augusta performed by Don Cherry and Willie Nelson. (not the “Don Cherry” that we knew from Hockey Night in Canada.)

Legend has it that the first verse came to Loggins while he was standing on the 14th hole at Augusta. Though Loggins was the composer, the specific piano intro that “tingles” every golf fan’s ears was a bit of a happy accident. During the recording session, musician Mike Hanna dropped by the studio, sat at a seven-foot Yamaha piano, and composed those iconic opening bars on the spot.

Well, there you have it, the munchies, the myths and a little tidbit about that familiar tune we hear every time we watch The Masters.

They say the second you step onto the grass at Augusta National, the rest of the world... disappears. You are not bothered by billboards or corporate logos on tee blocks. As a matter of fact, there are no ads in sight, other than logos on the players’ shirts and hats. It’s a total sanctuary where the only brand that matters is the golf world’s main event, The Masters.

Augusta National’s dedication to tradition is best experienced through the absolute legend of the concessions: the Pimento Cheese sandwich. While prices are rising like crazy for almost everything else, the price for the famed sandwich, and other menu favourites, have not changed in price since 2003. At $1.50 USD and wrapped in that iconic green plastic, the Pimento Cheese Sandwich remains a delicious piece of history that tastes exactly the same as it did 23 years ago. Whether that’s a good taste or not is up to the taster.

Ten Rules That Define the Patron Experience at The Masters

1. The “No Running” Mandate

Augusta is a place of poise. You will never see a mad dash for a viewing spot. Running is strictly prohibited; patrons are expected to walk briskly but with decorum. Those caught breaking into a jog risk being ejected and having their badges permanently revoked.

2. The “Vacant Chair” Courtesy

The folding chair is a patron’s most loyal companion. You can place an official chair at a specific hole to reserve your spot for the entire day. If the owner is away, anyone may sit in it, but the moment the owner returns, the temporary occupant must vacate the seat immediately and politely.

While players might sign items at the practice range earlier in the week, asking for an autograph on the golf course during tournament rounds is strictly forbidden.

5. The “Sitting on the Grass” Rule

Unlike the sprawl often seen at other majors, patrons are discouraged from sitting directly on the grass in a way that appears “unruly.” One should stand, use a grandstand, or sit in an official Master’s folding chairs.

6. Strict Electronic Silence

The ban extends far beyond cell phones. Laptops, tablets, and even “smart” wearable devices that transmit data are prohibited. The goal is to keep the outside world entirely outside the gates.

Cameras are allowed during practice rounds, but once the tournament begins on Thursday, they are strictly prohibited. The only way to capture a photo of the action is through the lenses of the official Masters photographers.

Every concession item is sold in green bags and wrappers. This ensures that if a piece of litter happens to blow onto the grass, it blends in with the green fairways and remains virtually invisible to the television cameras.

More On That Official Master’s Chair

For a patron, aka a “spectator” at any other golf tournament, the official Master’s chair is more than just a place to sit; it is a tactical tool. Available for $35 USD at the on-site merchandise stands, these chairs are specifically designed to be armless and feature a flat “foot” to protect the pristine turf.

The true magic of the chair lies in the “Unwritten Rule of Reservation.” Thousands of patrons arrive at dawn, buy their chair, and place it at a prime location. Not sure where I would put mine. perhaps behind the 12th tee at Amen Corner or close to the 18th green.

Once placed, that chair is your personal piece of real estate for the day. You can leave it for hours to walk the course or visit the concessions, and it will remain exactly where you left it. In a world of chaos, the Masters chair represents a unique social contract of honesty and respect that has lasted for 90 editions of this storied tournament.

Once we’ve spent the weekend watching the world’s best, most of us will be itching to head to our favourite course to try and re-create some of those legendary shots.

Just don’t be too hard on yourself if you aren’t ripping it 300+ yards down the centre of the fairway the second you step onto the tee. The pros make it look easy, but the rest of us are just there for the love of the game. Enjoy the 90th Masters, everyone.

So, here is the deal.

It is April 5, 2026, Easter Sunday. The Blue Jays have officially kicked off their season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are winding down a disappointing regular-season campaign.

Go Jays Go

Before I dive into the hockey talk, I have to give a quick shout-out to the Jays. For the first time, I watched the first three games of the season in their entirety, a thrilling three-game sweep of the visiting Oakland Athletics. It felt as though they picked up exactly where they left off after last year’s postseason run, which ended in that crushing Game 7 defeat to the Dodgers in the Championship Series. I truly hope they get another crack at the Commissioner’s Trophy this year.

Now, Back to the Rink

As a diehard Leafs fan, I’ve learned to keep expectations low. I’ve been a supporter for far too long to get sucked into the delusional dream of a Stanley Cup. If they manage to survive a round or two, I consider it a successful year. A Cup win remains on my bucket list, but I hope I have plenty of time left to see that actually happen.

Usually, once Toronto is out of the picture, my loyalties shift to whichever Canadian teams are still in the hunt. This year, something very strange has happened: I have, heaven help me, become a Habs fan.

I’ll say it one more time just so it can sink in: I am currently a Montreal Canadiens fan (though special terms and conditions definitely apply).

I’m not running out to buy a Montreal Canadiens ball cap, and a team jersey is out of the question, but I am cheering for them. And why not? They are a pleasure to watch. They play the game the right way, structured, hardworking, and with a “team-first” approach that is refreshing to witness.

An All-Canadian Final - Bettman Would Cringe

But imagine the absolute spectacle if we ended up with an all-Canadian final: the Montreal Canadiens versus the Edmonton Oilers. After years of the Cup residing in the States, having the championship decided on Canadian ice between two of our most iconic franchises would be a dream come true for the entire country.

However, if that dream scenario does become reality, my brief “playoff fling” with Montreal would have to come to a respectful end. In a Canadiens-Oilers final, my heart would pull me toward Edmonton. I want to see Connor McDavid hoist that elusive trophy before he retires. He is the most determined, hardworking player I’ve seen in years, a true force of nature once he laces up the skates. He has earned his place among the greats, and a Stanley Cup ring is the final piece of that puzzle.

For now, I’m enjoying this short-term change of scenery. No pressure, no decades of emotional baggage; just good, honest hockey. This is a temporary arrangement, a playoff vacation of sorts

At the end of the day, I know exactly who I am: a Leafs fan cautiously exploring other options. But for this spring, I’m trading my cynicism for a bit of Canadian flair. Whether it’s Montreal’s disciplined team effort or McDavid’s sheer brilliance, I’m just happy to see a team that remembers the season doesn’t have to end in April.

After a winter of never-ending snowstorms, my back was in no mood for golf. My poor wife had to take care of the shovelling after the last four or five snowfalls because my back was having none of it. The thought of swinging a golf club even hurt.

When the soreness refused to budge, I finally visited an RMT who gave me a surprising bit of “homework” after my first visit. It turns out, the road to a healthy back starts way down at your toes.

The Towel Scrunch & The “Heel-Glue” Rule

The first part of the homework? Lay a hand towel on a smooth floor, place a glass of water at one end, and draw the towel toward you using nothing but your toes. This is best done sitting in a chair.

Here’s the Catch

Your heels must stay flat on the floor. No sliding, no lifting, no cheating. Keeping the heels stationary is non-negotiable because it isolates the intrinsic muscles of the foot. As soon as the heel lifts, you’re using your ankles to “cheat” the movement. By keeping your heels glued down, you force your toes to do the heavy lifting, which builds the internal support your arches need to stabilize your entire frame.

The Great Divide: The Big Toe Press

The second exercise my RMT threw at me moves beyond just strength and into the world of “brain-to-toe” coordination. It’s called the Big Toe Press.

While sitting with your feet flat, you attempt to pin your four “lesser” toes firmly to the ground while lifting only the big toe. Then, you reverse it: press the big toe down hard while attempting to fan and lift the other four.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Believe me, it’s much tougher than you think. When I first started, I was shocked at how weak my toes were—and how disconnected they felt from my brain. I also discovered that my right big toe was much weaker than the left one.

Finding Your “Tripod” Foundation

For a golfer, all of this is about building a strong “tripod” foundation between the heel, the big toe, and the little toe. Here’s why that matters for your game:

• Ground Your Game: Strong toes allow you to “grip” the turf, providing a secure base during your swing.

• Right the Ship: If your balance shifts or your alignment falters mid-swing, active foot muscles help you self-correct before the mistake reaches the clubhead.

• Power Transfer: Preventing your feet from collapsing ensures a cleaner, more efficient transfer of power from the turf to the ball.

About That Weak Big Toe on My Right Foot

I told “Professor Google” that I was a lefty with a weak big toe on my right foot and asked what effect that would have on my golf swing.

The answer: It generally leads to a fade (or a slice). Since the right foot is the lead foot for a lefty, a weak big toe causes that “tripod” to collapse during the downswing. This often makes the lead hip spin out, or the weight fall toward the toes, forcing an “over-the-top” move that cuts across the ball.

Wow, I think Professor Google has seen my swing. I’ve hit more slices than I care to mention. Maybe I have finally found the root cause for my slice. Or perhaps I have discovered a new excuse to add to the list. I can call it WTF for short. (Weak Toe’s Fault)

So there you have it. Start scrunching those towels and mastering the Big Toe Press. If you can “right the ship” from the ground up, you might just say goodbye to those pesky hooks or slices. Here’s hoping anyway.

Day Two: The Logistics Puzzle Solved

Today, we choose our adventure. Whether you split up or stay together, feeding your “hunger” for a good time is the priority.

Option A: The Split-Squad

• Half the group tosses the clubs in one car and heads to Picton Golf & Country Club to play 18 at one of the region’s oldest golf courses. Established in 1907, it’s a stunning track with enough water to keep you honest. Great views of Picton Bay on holes 1, 17, and 18.

• The other half of the group enjoys a door-to-door experience, a guided wine tour with Sandbanks Tours & Experiences. Your knowledgeable tour guide will help you discover the County’s famous wines, including their very popular Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

Option B: The Foursome

If everyone in the group is “hungry” for golf, the whole crew heads to Picton for 18 holes. The clubhouse deck, overlooking the 18th green, is a prime spot for a post-round analysis, together with lunch & beverages. You will have plenty of time to do a little window shopping in Picton on your way back to the Rooster after golf.

If you do stop in Picton, grab yourself an order of gun man du dumplings from Sujeo Korean Restaurant. They are very tasty.

Dine in Amelia’s Garden Dining Room or The Barley Room Pub. They both share the same kitchen and offer great food, with different atmospheres. Make sure you try their famous homemade Coconut Cream Pie. Wow.

Day Three: Take a Bite Out of the Bear or Hunt for Hidden Treasures

After another stellar Rooster breakfast, it’s time to check out. Today, we take two cars to allow for a “choose-your-own-adventure” travel-home day.

Option A - Play Golf at Black Bear Ridge Golf & Resort

For those wanting one last golf challenge, head to Black Bear Ridge Golf & Resort. You are going to love this place. ScoreGolf ranked "The Bear" as the 13th-favourite public golf course in Canada in 2025. It is a striking, masterfully designed layout with picturesque vistas that will demand your best. Do yourself a favour, play the forward tees and enjoy your day.

Option B - Go Exploring and Antiquing

Take the second vehicle and explore the villages of Bloomfield and Wellington on a self-guided “Shopping, Antiquing, and Nibbling” tour. Wander through quaint boutiques, do a bit of antiquing, and sample the “fine foods” found along the way.

The Grand Rendezvous

With such a royal getaway, make sure it ends with a bang.

Once the golfers are done golfing and the explorers are done exploring, everyone will meet at Signal Brewing Co. in Corbyville. It’s the perfect strategic location, close to both Black Bear and the highway. I’m partial to their thin-crust pizzas from the wood-fired oven. It’s the ultimate way to swap stories of birdies and antique finds before hitting the road. You will love the huge patio overlooking the Moira River.

I am saddened by the fact that, for me, watching PGA golf on TV now feels like a moral dilemma.

Golf is one of my great escapes. It lives in a quiet corner of my brain where the noise fades, and the rhythm of the game does what it has always done: calms the mind, soothes the soul, and reminds me that beauty still exists in small, deliberate movements. (aka - sticking it to within 3’ of the pin from 150 yards out)

But lately, when I reach for the remote, something inside me hesitates. The game hasn’t changed. The world around it sure has, though

And That’s the Part I Can’t Shake

I find myself wondering about the players I’ve admired for years. Not because I expect them to share my politics, and not because I think athletes owe us their private beliefs. But because these aren’t normal times. The stakes feel different now. The ground feels different. The silence feels different. I need to know.

Take Scotty Scheffler, for example. During last year’s Ryder Cup, a reporter asked if he had any message for Donald Trump, who was scheduled to arrive later that day. “Tell him he is doing a great job”, Scotty replied.

WTF, Scotty, are you a Trumper? Are you condoning the fact that Trump and his goons are tearing the world apart? Please say it ain’t so.

Here’s your chance to speak up and be a hero. Tell the golf world that you do not support what Trump is doing, and that it must stop. The world needs heroes right now, and you would be the perfect candidate to lead the charge for the PGA players. Accept the challenge. Set the example. Be our hero.

Poor Old Wayne. He Entered the Dark Side

Look what happened to The Weiner when he started to swing the sticks with The Donald. His “thumbs-up” as he passed Team USA’s bench at the 4-Nations championship game didn’t help him either.

Gretzky went straight from “The Great One” to “The Great Once”. How can he play golf with such a despicable human being? It might be good for your pocketbook, but it is doing serious damage to your integrity and popularity. Do the right thing, Wayne. Stand up and be a good human being. Tell the hockey world that Trump’s actions are wrong and must stop. Maybe after that, Gretzky can once again be “The Great One”.

What About Leaf’s Captain?

And while we’re talking about hockey, I need Austin Matthews to set the record straight. Congrats on being named captain of the USA Men’s Hockey Team and for winning the Olympic Gold Medal. But why the hell did you go to the White House? Were you just caught up in the moment or something? I was so disappointed to see you there. Now I must know, are you ok with Trump and what he is doing? Cuz if you were, you would need to go. You would need to be traded. You would not deserve to be a member, and certainly not the captain, of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Studies of voter registration show that the NBA leans heavily Democratic, the NFL is politically mixed, and leagues like MLB and the NHL tilt more Republican. Golf, with its older, wealthier, and overwhelmingly white demographics, tends to be Republican in the southern and midwestern states, while cold‑weather states tend to be Democratic.

I used to watch golf without thinking about who voted for whom. Now I can’t help but wonder. Which of my favourite PGA players shares my belief that the world is in a dangerous moment?

Which of them see what I see, the polarization, the erosion of norms, the rising anger, and feel compelled to state their position? And which of them are quietly comfortable with the way things are, because silence is easier than honesty and tax breaks are easier than courage?

I don’t expect athletes to become activists. I don’t expect them to deliver speeches, take sides or turn their careers into political battlegrounds. I understand why they stay quiet. Pro Leagues manage messaging. Teams discourage controversy. Fans can turn on a player in a heartbeat. The NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, and PGA all prefer clean narratives, controlled statements, and athletes who “focus on the game.” That’s the business model.

We’re Not Living in Business‑as‑Usual Times

We are living in a moment when silence feels like complicity. When neutrality feels like surrender. When the world, especially the United States, needs people with influence to show fellow American citizens and the rest of the world that integrity still matters. Not perfect people. Not saints. Just people willing to stand up and say, “This isn’t normal. This isn’t right. We can do better. We must do better.”

I’m not asking golfers to agree with me politically. I’m asking them to care about the world they live in. I’m asking them to show that the values they display on the course, honesty, accountability, composure, respect, aren’t just performance traits, but human ones.

Because right now, the joy of watching a PGA event has slipped away from me. Not because the sport changed, but because I have. Because the world has.

Unfortunately, politics has seeped its way into every corner of life, including the fairways. And because I can’t help but hope that the athletes I admire will step forward and remind us all that courage still exists in public life.

Maybe that’s naïve. Maybe it’s unfair. Maybe it’s just the grief of losing something I once loved without thinking. But I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this way. I think many fans across leagues, across borders, across political lines, are all wrestling with the same question:

What does it mean to love a sport when the world around it feels like it’s coming apart?

I don’t have the answer. But I know this: sports heroes aren’t made by athletic talent alone. They’re made by the moments they choose to stand for something larger than themselves or their sport. And right now, the world could use a few heroes. And who better to lead the charge than our privileged and influential professional athletes?

Timber Ridge Golf Course, located in Brighton, Ontario, was established in 2001 and quickly garnered a reputation as one of eastern Ontario’s premier golfing destinations.

Designed by golf course architect Steven Ward, the course was meticulously crafted to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, offering a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels.

Over the years, Timber Ridge has hosted numerous tournaments and events, further solidifying its status as a must-visit course in the region. The course’s commitment to quality, from its well-maintained fairways to its welcoming atmosphere, has made it a beloved spot for both locals and visitors

I Have Many Fond Memories of Timber Ridge Golf Course

I used to operate a specialty paper converting plant in Brighton. During those years, I played in the men’s league at Timber Ridge. We would play 18 holes each week and cap the evening off with some food and drink in the clubhouse after our round.

I remember one week playing with a guy on the Timber Ridge maintenance team. He was having the round of his life. It was so much fun to witness such amazing golf. Every shot he hit was pure.

Standing on the tee deck of hole #17, he was sitting at 58 strokes. If he parred the par-three 17th and the par-four 18th, he would card a 65 for the round, matching the lowest score ever posted at Timber Ridge by a recreational golfer.

Sadly, he played the final two holes, bogey, bogey, leaving him with a round of 67, or 4 under the course par of 71. I don’t know about you, but I would’ve taken that score in a heartbeat.

One of the Top Five Golf Courses in the Bay of Quinte Golf Region

The landscape of Timber Ridge Golf Course stands out from other courses in the Bay of Quinte and Prince Edward County golf region.

Set on 200 acres of rolling terrain, the course is surrounded by dense forests, mature trees, and natural water features that create a picturesque backdrop.

Unlike the flatter courses in the region, Timber Ridge’s rolling fairways and natural elevation changes add genuine complexity to every shot, while wide‑open views of the surrounding countryside enhance the entire experience.

Most of the greens at Timber Ridge are multi‑tiered, and those levels demand precise approach shots to avoid navigating tricky putts across different tiers. Don’t feel bad if you walk off with a four‑putt now and then. I’ve certainly had a few over the years.

A Tee Shot I Will Never Forget

I remember one tee shot on hole # 1 that turned out to be quite funny.

Being a lefty, I planned to aim down the left side of the fairway and hit a baby draw that would land the ball in the centre of the fairway.

As we all know, things don’t always go as planned in golf, and my first tee shot on that day was evidence of that. I hit a fade (or was it a slice), and my ball headed for the woods down the left side.

I re-teed and hit a nice drive straight down the middle, next to the 200-yard marker.

I was preparing to hit my second shot when I heard a cry from the woods, “Are you hitting a Bridgestone e6?“

“Yes“, I replied.

“That was a little too close for comfort. Be more careful next time“, yelled the guy back to me.

I replied, “Sorry about that“.

For those of you who have not played Timber Ridge, there are several very nice homes tucked into the woods down the left side of hole #1 fairway. But when the leaves are on the trees, those homes are virtually invisible from the tee blocks.

To this day, when I think back to that tee shot, I picture a guy out on his back deck in his housecoat, morning newspaper under his left arm and a fresh cup of coffee in his right hand, when, all of a sudden, my Bridgestone e6 lands smack dab into his cup of coffee and causes the coffee to splash all over his face, housecoat, and newspaper. I must confess, I chuckle when that image appears in my head.

I should have had a little more fun with that guy that day. Rather than just saying “sorry”. Maybe I should have yelled back, “Do I have a shot?“ or “Could you please throw it back to me?”

Fantastic Food, Excellent Service

The food and drink offerings at Timber Ridge Golf Course perfectly complement the overall golfing experience. Both inside and outside spaces provide a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for golfers to unwind after their round.

The clubhouse features the Ironwood Lounge and Southside Terrace, as well as a larger dining room called The Timber Room that accommodates 150 guests. There are two fire pits next to the Southside Terrace overlooking hole #18 green. I can tell you from firsthand experience that sitting next to a fire with a cool beverage in your hand after a round, and watching golfers play up #18, is extremely relaxing.

Greetings, Everyone:

Now that The Hungry Golfer has officially settled into its new home on Substack, I wanted to share a bit about why I made the switch — and to thank you for sticking with me through this transition. I also want to thank the recent subscribers who have joined us for the ride.

I’d been looking for a platform that would let me do what I love most: share stories and images about golf, food, places to stay, and the joy of great company. Substack gives me the freedom to focus on those experiences without distraction; just writing, photographing, and celebrating the people and places that make this region, and the ones beyond it, worth exploring.

As far as The Hungry Golfer name and brand, don’t be surprised if you see me using “THG” more often. I’m not sure if I’m getting smarter or just lazier, but THG is a lot easier to read, write, and say than The Hungry Golfer. Plus, it has a bit of a “THC” ring to it, which makes me giggle.

I appreciate your support and for sticking around for the ride. It means a lot. The 2026 golf season is going to be a great one, and I’m excited to share it with you, complete with stories, photos, videos, and everything in between.

There are so many slang words used by golfers. Many non-golfers would be totally lost if they heard two golfers talking to each other about their games.

Counting Your Score

Stroke — Every time you hit the ball with any of your golf clubs, it is called a stroke. (You can also be assessed penalty strokes, but that’s a lesson for another day)

Par — If you get the ball in the hole in the same number of strokes that is indicated on the scorecard, you parred the hole — Congrats!

Birdie — When you get the ball in the hole using one less stroke than a par on the scorecard, you birdied the hole — Well Done!

Eagle — This is when you put the ball in the hole in two strokes fewer than par. This is hard to do for any golfer, but for high-handicap golfers, eagles are very elusive. Whenever you get one, it is a special day for sure.

Albatross — This is what every golfer dreams about, but few ever get one. An albatross is scoring three strokes fewer than par for the hole. If you take two strokes to put the ball in the hole on a par 5, you score it as an albatross. Keep that Ball! That is a rare lifetime achievement.

Condor — A condor is when you only take one stroke to put the ball in the hole on a par 5. That is quite the hole-in-one. There are only six reports of condors being scored anywhere in the world. Good luck getting one of them in real golf. (I’ve seen several on PlayStation Golf, though)

Hole-in-One — This is when you put the ball in the hole using only one stroke. This is a very special occasion for pro and amateur golfers alike. Hole-in-Ones usually happen on par 3 holes.

Bogey — This is when you take one extra stroke above par.

Double Bogey — Ouch! A double bogey is two strokes over par

Triple Bogey — The dreaded “triple” is three strokes over par. If you are tracking your handicap, chances are you score it as a double bogey, depending on the score index of the hole.

Quadruple Bogey — Pick up your ball and proceed to the next hole. That hole completely crushed you. (Nice double if you are tracking your handicap)

Parts of a Golf Club

Grip — This is at the top of the shaft of your club. Having good grips is key to making a good swing. Once you start seeing wear on your grips, it is time to replace them.

Shaft — The shaft of the club connects the clubhead to the grip. Shafts can be steel or graphite and have various stiffness specifications to best suit a golfer’s needs.

Clubhead — The clubhead is the only part of the golf club that should come in contact with the ball. For irons, the blade of the clubhead can be either muscle-back or cavity-back.

Cavity-back clubheads are more forgiving as they have a bigger “sweet spot”.

Hosel — The hosel is the metal socket that connects the clubhead to the shaft. This is the weakest part of a golf club. One reason for this is that moisture can run down the shaft and into the hosel, and cause the base of the shaft to corrode and weaken.

Ferrule — This is the small, hard plastic decorative collar that hides the connection of the shaft to the hosel.

Names for Other Golf Equipment

Sticks — Some golfers refer to their golf clubs as their sticks.

Rock or Shell — Some golfers refer to their golf balls as their rock or their shell.

Tee — This is the little wooden or plastic peg that you set your ball on when you are hitting from a tee box. Never use a tee when hitting anywhere else on the course.

Russian Tee (Brokenoff) — When my friends and I use a broken tee for an iron shot from the tee blocks, we refer to it as a brokenoff.

Tee Box — This is the designated area on each hole where you hit your first shot for that hole. Each hole has different sets of tee boxes, depending on the golfer’s skill level.

Tee Blocks — On every Tee Box, there are different coloured Tee Blocks for golfers of various skill levels. If you are a high handicapper, do yourself a favour and play from the forward tee blocks. You will have a much more pleasant day and your scorecard will love it. Plus, the golfers playing behind you will be very appreciative that you are using forward tees.

The Tips — If you hear someone say that they played from the tips, they played from the Tee Blocks that make the course the longest. Quite often, the tips are the Black Tee Blocks. This is where the pros hit from.

Provisional Ball — If you are unsure of where your tee shot went, you can ask your playing partners if you can hit a provisional ball. If you know them well, you can always ask them for a do-over, but good luck with that.

Breakfast Ball — Many casual players will allow you to hit a second shot from the #1 tee blocks if your first shot did not go well. Who wants to start their round with a terrible tee shot from # 1, right?

Describing the Flight of a Golf Ball

Here is where it can get ugly, but not always. All we can do is keep swinging and hope for the best, right?

Draw — Who doesn’t love a nice, easy draw? A draw is when the flight of the ball goes gently from right to left for right-handed golfers and gently from left to right for left-handed golfers.

Hook — This is an overcooked draw. That gentle draw became a runaway train that took a sharper turn than you planned for. You will probably be hitting your second shot from the rough, or perhaps the next fairway.

Fade — This is the opposite of a draw. For a right-handed hitter, the ball will fade gently from left to right. For left-handed hitters, a fade will fly gently from right to left.

Slice — This is an overcooked fade that is likely going to end up in the rough on the opposite side of the fairway that you were aiming at, or in the next fairway.

Straight — I almost forgot about hitting it straight. Dead straight, right down the middle of the fairway. Don’t you just love it when that happens?

Elephant’s Ass: High and Stinky — This is when the ball goes very high but not too far down the fairway.

Sky Pilot — This is kind of like an Elephant’s Ass but a Sky Pilot could actually travel the intended distance, only much higher than expected.

Worm-Burner —If you top your ball and send it rocketing down the fairway on the ground, your golf ball can deal a fatal blow to some poor unsuspecting earthworm out for a little fresh air. Hence the term, Worm-Burner.

Russian Chip: (onandoff) - This is when you attempt to chip onto the green, and you hit the ball too hard or blade it, and it runs across the green and off again on the other side.

Describing Contact With the Golf Ball at the Time of Swing

Fat — Hitting it “fat” means that your clubhead hit the ground before making contact with the ball. This usually means that you will be short of your desired distance.

Chunked it — Hitting it “chunky” means you hit it really fat, and the clubhead went into the ground well in advance of coming into contact with the ball. The ball probably trickled a few yards forward if lucky.

Thinned it — Hitting it “thin” means the face of your clubhead came in contact with the ball a little too high, and you missed the sweet spot. The ball flight will be quite low, and the ball could end up farther down the fairway you were hoping for.

Topped it — When you say that you “topped it”, it means that you hit it really thin. Kind of like you almost missed it. The ball will not likely leave the ground and will roll down the fairway a much shorter distance than hoped.

Hitting off the Toe — This is when the face of the club comes in contact with the ball off-centre, towards the farthest part of the clubface, the toe. The result will be a loss of distance and accuracy.

Hitting off the Heel — This is when the face of the club comes in contact with the ball off-centre, towards the base of the shaft at the hosel. The result will be a loss of distance and direction.

Hosel Rocket — Heads Up Everyone — This is when you come close to missing the ball completely and just catch a piece of it with the hosel of the golf club. The ball can fly straight right, straight left, or anywhere in between.

Technical Details Regarding the Golf Course

Slope Rating — This is a measurement of how hard the golf course is to play for a bogey golfer relative to the degree of difficulty for a golfer with no handicap. (scratch golfer)

Slope Ratings can vary from 60 to 150, with the average being 113. Just remember, the higher the slope rating, the harder the course will be to play.

Stimp Rating — Using a stimpmeter, this is a measurement of how fast the greens are rolling. For PGA or LPGA players, their greens are fast and will usually have a stimp rating of 11 to 13 feet. For most public courses, the stimp rating will be 10 feet or lower.

Over the years, I’ve made many friendships with Americans, both personally and professionally. I worked for a Chicago-based specialty paper company for nine years and spent a great deal of time in the United States. I knew which NFL teams my colleagues cheered for, Bears fans at our Chicago office, Packers fans at our processing facility in Wisconsin, but I never knew whether they were Democrats or Republicans. How would I? Why would it matter? Politics rarely came up. In good times, a perfect government is one you barely notice. It simply goes about its business without pomp or pageantry.

That was the America I knew and loved. Friendly, fair, trustworthy, and caring.

Today, America Feels Distant

Every morning I wake up, turn on the news, and feel a mix of disbelief and unease. What once felt stable now feels erratic. What once felt decent now feels openly cruel. Democratic rights that Americans long took for granted are being stripped away piece by piece. And at the centre of it all is Donald Trump, governing not as a democratic leader but in an increasingly authoritarian manner, turning political disagreement into permanent division, leadership into performance, and governance into a politics driven by resentment, loyalty tests, and fear.

What troubles me most isn’t what he says or does. It’s how easily it’s all being normalized. Democratic norms erode a little more each day. Cruelty toward the vulnerable becomes routine. And perhaps hardest to accept is that millions of Americans either support it outright or shrug it off and accept it as the cost of doing business, or the price of living comfortably.

I find myself thinking about the people I once worked with in Chicago and Wisconsin—good people, smart people, people I considered friends. I wonder if they’re okay with what’s happening. Were they okay with two of their fellow citizens being shot in cold blood on the streets of Minnesota? Or do they feel the same knot in their stomach that I do when they watch the news? Are they ashamed of what their country has become under Trump’s leadership, or do they feel trapped—unsure when or how to speak up, or whether speaking up even matters anymore?

Good Needs to Prevail. I Still Believe in Good Americans

The United States is not one man. It never has been. It is teachers, nurses, engineers, factory workers, small business owners, volunteers, parents, and neighbours. It is people who believe in fairness, decency, and democracy, even when the system feels stacked against them. From Canada, I look south not with judgment, but with concern and solidarity.

I’ve travelled widely in the U.S., for both business and pleasure. I have countless fond memories. Today, I can’t imagine doing those trips, not because of the people, but because of the current administration. Until the Trump era ends, the United States will remain off-limits for me. Something that I never thought would be possible in my lifetime.

Despair is Not a Strategy

History shows us that meaningful change rarely begins with hope; it begins with action. This is where the 3.5% Rule comes in.

The 3.5% Rule comes from Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist whose research into nonviolent civil resistance has turned conventional wisdom on its head. In her groundbreaking study with Maria J. Stephan—summarized in the book Why Civil Resistance Works and in academic papers—Chenoweth examined hundreds of movements over the past century in democracies and authoritarian states alike.

The findings are striking: no regime in modern history has been able to sustain itself once nonviolent resistance reached about 3.5% of the population. That threshold might sound modest, but in practical terms it’s huge, especially in a country as large as the United States.

Why does it work?

Chenoweth and Stephan’s research shows a few consistent patterns:

• Nonviolent movements draw broader participation than violent ones. People are more willing to march, strike, protest, organize, and sit in—because nonviolence lowers the barrier to entry.

• Institutions fracture under sustained civic pressure. When public opinion shifts and ordinary citizens stand up, key pillars of power (courts, police, bureaucrats, business leaders) begin to doubt the legitimacy of the regime.

• Violence delegitimizes the government. When authorities respond with force to peaceful protesters, they expose themselves. The moral contrast becomes a catalyst for more support.

• Persistence matters more than numbers. It’s not just hitting 3% on one day—it’s sustaining pressure across time, through coordinated action and civic engagement.

In the context of the United States, 3.5% means roughly twelve million people actively and peacefully resisting, marching, organizing at the local level, challenging abuses in court, boycotting harmful policies, and showing up on election day to cast their vote.

This small percentage of the population doesn’t require unanimity. It doesn’t require perfect alignment. It doesn’t require charismatic leaders or giant protest marches seen around the world. What it requires is consistency and nonviolence.

And that’s the genius of Chenoweth’s research: it puts power back in the hands of ordinary people. Not because they are louder, but because they are many, peaceful and unified in purpose.

This isn’t theory. It’s evidence. It’s history. It’s a strategy that works.

Yes, things often get worse before they get better. Those in power push back hardest when they feel control slipping. That backlash isn’t failure, it’s evidence that pressure is working. Change is uncomfortable. Democracy is not easy, and it can get very noisy. But silence is far more dangerous.

To the good Americans reading this: you are not alone. Many of you are tired. Angry. Embarrassed. Afraid. Those feelings are valid. But authoritarianism depends on exhaustion and disengagement. It thrives when good people withdraw.

Three percent of you, standing peacefully and persistently, can change the direction of your country.

And know this: Canadians are watching. Are we concerned? Absolutely, but we are rooting for you. We know the United States is better than this moment. We believe goodwill ultimately overcomes evil. But it won’t happen by waiting. It will happen because ordinary people decide they’ve had enough and act. And don’t wait for the midterms, that might be too late. The time to act is NOW!

The road ahead may be rough. It may get worse before it gets better. But it is a road that must be travelled. And history tells us that when enough people stand up quietly, calmly, and together, even the loudest bullies eventually run out of room to stand.

We know you can do this, and we’re with you.

Winter may have the fairways buried for now, but by the end of February, we’ll be less than 60 sleeps from teeing it up again in the Bay of Quinte and Prince Edward County golf region.

Some golfers stick to one home course. Others like to roam. With so many standout courses in our region, it would be a shame not to experience as many great courses as you can each season.

I am listing the prime-time weekend rates for 18 holes at each of the top five courses. All membership pricing is based on packages that are non-transferable and allow unrestricted tee times, 7 days a week.

Trillium Wood Golf Club, Picton Golf & Country Club, and Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort offer an “Unlimited Play” membership, which can bring the cost to play golf down even more than indicated in their 60-round rate. The other courses have limits on their membership packages but offer additional rounds for very reasonable rates.

Tips to Save On Green Fees

Most courses have lower membership packages that incentivize you to play at off-prime times. If you are an early riser or enjoy afternoon golf, there are packages that will save you money. There are also weekday-only packages that are less expensive than unrestricted play memberships.

Before I wrap up, I want to share a few thoughts on each of the five golf courses in the chart. These comments aren’t about whether you should play them or not. As far as I’m concerned, I’d play them all. Each one is unique and special in its own way.

2026 will be a milestone year for Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club as it becomes the Quinte region’s only 36-hole golf destination. As of June 5, golfers can choose between the new North Course and the well-loved South Course.

The North Course is best played with a power cart, as it covers more ground and has a varied terrain. The South Course remains a very walkable layout with classic appeal. From the right tees, it’s very playable; from the tips, it demands respect.

Unlike some other top courses in the region, Timber Ridge does not offer membership packages; instead, it operates on daily green fees and dynamic pricing. That makes it a great option for golfers who like flexibility and are looking for a great golf experience without the commitment.

Trillium Wood Golf Club

Trillium Wood Golf Club is a very walkable, well-maintained course that rewards steady, thoughtful golf and suits frequent play. Because it hosts numerous corporate tournaments each season, getting a tee time takes a bit of attention, but regulars quickly learn the routine.

Its unlimited-play membership and flexible Golf Plan help keep the cost per round very reasonable. With an upgraded practice area and driving range completed in 2025, Trillium Wood offers strong value for golfers who like to play and practice often.

Let’s start with the obvious: walking a golf course feels better. Your legs get a proper stretch, your heart does a bit more than the bare minimum, and you feel more in tune with the course—and your game. By the time you tap in on 18, you’ve earned that clubhouse sandwich and cold one, and they’re going to taste fantastic!

I walked the last five rounds of my golf season and felt fantastic. More energy. Clearer head. Even lost a few pounds, without doing anything drastic like giving up butter tarts.

But let’s be honest—walking isn’t always the easy play. It’s tough when your playing partners are zipping around in carts and the temperature’s north of 30°C.

Do Canadian Golfers Walk?

Hard numbers are about as scarce as birdies on a windy day, but a Golf Canada study suggests fewer than 40% of us walk 18 regularly. That’s still better than our neighbours to the south, where riding reigns supreme. But we’re not immune to the trend: more clubs, especially private and busy public ones, lean hard on cart use. Why? Not just for the pace of play, but for the bottom line.

How Many Steps Are in 18 Holes?

You’ll log about 11,000 to 14,000 steps during a typical round. That’s 6 to 8 km, depending on how creatively your tee shots wander. Toss in a few hills, and you’ve got yourself a light hike with amazing scenery. Compare that to the average Canadian’s 4,819 steps a day, and golf starts to look like a decent fitness plan.

The Health Perks of Ditching the Cart

Walking 18 holes can burn between 600 and 1,200 calories, depending on the course and how much you carry. Riding? You’ll burn about a third of that.

Are Cart Fees Propping Up Green Fees?

Short answer: yes. Cart rentals can make up 15%–25% of a course’s annual revenue. That money helps fund everything from maintenance crews to tee box repairs. If everyone walked tomorrow, green fees would almost certainly climb. Walking is great for you, but it may not be great for the course’s books.

When Should You Walk—And When Should You Ride?

There are days when walking is the clear winner. Mild temps, familiar course, and a body that doesn’t feel like it just got hit by a truck. But there are also valid reasons to ride:

I’m just about to turn 70. I’ve lived through rotary phones, lava lamps, the Clapper, Chia Pets, Slinkys, and the full rise and fall of the fax machine. So, you’d think I’d have a decent handle on the English language by now.

Then along came the word woke, popping up everywhere like it had its own publicist and a podcast deal. At first, I thought it had something to do with sleep. Logical enough. You wake up in the morning, so if you’ve woke, you must’ve been asleep. End of story. Hit snooze and carry on.

But no. Turns out woke has roots in African American slang going back to the 1930s. It originally meant being alert to injustice, especially racial injustice. Over time, it morphed into a broader term for being socially aware, tuned into things like inequality, discrimination, and empathy. In theory, being called woke means you’re paying attention and trying not to be a jerk.

But in practice? That’s where it gets murky. These days, being called woke might be a compliment, or it might be a sideways insult, depending on who’s saying it and how much cable news they’ve been watching. It can mean you care about others, or that you care too much and need to lighten up. If someone calls you woke, your best response is probably, “Define your terms.”

We all saw your three-minute pre-shot routine like you’re auditioning for Cirque du Soleil. Unless you’re putting for the U.S. Open (you’re not), just hit the ball. Golf isn’t a hostage negotiation. Be aware, not dramatic.

You don’t need to achieve monk-like serenity, but maybe don’t throw your club like you’re trying out for the javelin. And for the love of Arnie, rake the bunker. That sand isn’t just for your footprints.

Golf carts are helpful, but they’re not off-road vehicles. That “cart path only” sign isn’t a dare—it’s a plea. Respect the turf. It’s not your lawn, and the greenskeeper isn’t your personal landscaper.

If you’re ready and it’s safe, go. No need to wait for Bob to wrap up his third story about knee surgery. This isn’t a royal procession. Just play the shot and keep it moving.

Be Woke to Your Own Game

You’re not on the PGA Tour. If you’re thrashing around in the woods for your fifth ball and still lining up your putt like it’s for TV, maybe pick your ball up and proceed to the next hole. That hole totally kicked your ass, this time anyway.

So yeah, maybe I am a little woke. Not in the chant-at-a-rally, tweet-your-feelings kind of way, but in the “let’s just try not to be totally oblivious” sense. Golf is supposed to be fun, not a four-hour seminar in selfishness and denial.

Now, get out there, swing freely, laugh at your bad shots, and maybe, just maybe, don’t be that guy.

Do you like to have a little friendly competition when playing golf with your buddies?
We usually play a cart-to-cart match play format with the cumulative score for each two-man team deciding the outcome of each hole.

When a fourth golfer can’t play, and we don’t get a fill-in, the three of us usually play the Nines Game.

Scoring For The Nines Game

In the Nines Game, every hole is worth 9 points, and the game can only be played with three golfers.

All three players get points for each hole, based on each player’s score. In our version of the game, we award bonus points too, just to make it more interesting.

If you are the only player to par a hole, you get 5 points for that hole. If someone else in your threesome also pars, you each get 4 points, and the player with the higher score gets 1 point. That equals 9 points.

If all three players par the hole, each player gets 3 points for a total of 9 for that hole.

If you par a hole and one of the other players in your threesome gets a bogey and the third player gets a double-bogey, the scoring would be 5 points for you, 3 points for the bogey player, and 1 point for the double. That totals 9 points for that hole.

Don’t Forget Your Bonus Points

In our game, we have some interesting bonus point opportunities. If you happen to achieve one of the following, you will get 2 bonus points added to your score for that hole.

There is a catch, though: to qualify for the bonus points, a player must score a par or better on the hole in question.

Types of Bonus Points

Water Bounce: If you skip your ball across a water hazard and it returns to dry land and you can play it, you get 2 bonus points if you play on to par that hole.

Sandy: If you hit your ball out of a sand trap and par that hole, you get 2 bonus points. Find two sand traps on the same hole and still get a par, you are scoring large with 4 bonus points.

Barky: Trees are good to hit for points. Sometimes contact with a tree is obvious; at other times, it is more subtle. As long as at least one player in your threesome hears the sound of your ball coming into contact with any part of a tree, you get 2 bonus points for that tree contact. But remember, only if you par that hole. Hit two trees on the same hole and still get a par, well done, you get 4 bonus points.

Birdie: This one is pretty obvious. Birdie a hole and get two bonus points, and hopefully some props from your buds for that great birdie.

Eagle: Not that these bonus points come into play very often, but if you eagle a hole, you would get 2 bonus points for that spectacular performance.

Real High-Stakes Drama

It is always fun when at least two in our group are close in points coming down the stretch. Adds some excitement to the last few holes.

We don’t play for money or drinks, we just play the Nines Game for fun and a few bragging rights of course.

Here is the scorecard for the Nines Game that I played last week with two of my good friends, Larry and Ron.

As you can see, those two cagey veterans laid a pretty good beating on me; never fear, I will stand up, dust myself off, and keep on truckin’.

What is Your Score For This Hole?

There you are, standing on an elevated tee overlooking the fairway of a 550-yard par 5 with a slight dogleg left.

You tee it up, pick your target, and put a nice smooth swing on it.

Off it goes, down the left side of the fairway. Your ball makes slight contact with a few leaves in a tree, but still manages to fly a fair distance down the left side of the fairway, right into a fairway bunker.

From the fairway bunker, your second shot advances the ball down the fairway to about 100 yards from the pin.

Your third shot misses the green left and lands in a green-side bunker.

Your fourth shot from the bunker is amazing. You stick it 4, maybe 6 inches, from the cup. You make the putt. Nice par.

The other two players both bogeyed the hole.

How Did You Score?

Congratulations! You just parred that hole, and the other two players got bogies. That’s 5 points for you and 2 points for each of the two bogey boys. But wait, there’s more...

Now, let’s add up your bonus points.

• You hit some leaves on your tee shot. That’s a Barky, 2 bonus points.

• You then found the fairway bunker down the left. That’s a Sandy. 2 bonus points.

• You hit out of the greenside bunker on your fourth shot. That’s another Sandy and 2 more bonus points.

• Since you parred the hole, points would be 5 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 11 points for that hole. That’s huge. Well done.

I have seen golf groups of all shapes and sizes at golf courses in Belleville and Prince Edward County over the years. One thing always stood out. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

It’s no wonder golf tournaments, golf getaways, and golf trips are such popular choices for groups of all kinds. Golf courses offer the perfect blend of leisure and relationship-building opportunities.

I remember playing a 9-hole round with my brother and sisters in Penticton, BC, when we were there to attend my brother’s wedding. We all had an absolute blast playing golf. Even my one sister, who was playing her very first game, was enjoying herself.

If you are planning a golf getaway for a couple of nights, it would probably be best to pick a place to stay that provides food or is near a good selection of food establishments.

If you are planning on staying in Prince Edward County during your golf holiday, check out the accommodation section of Visit the County.

If you are planning a longer golf trip, perhaps short-term accommodation at a cottage or rental home might be a better option. This way, you could cook some of your meals at your home-away-from-home.

Treat Yourself to a Little Golf Heaven – Stay at a Golf Course

How would you like to stay right at a golf course? Imagine getting out of bed, having that mandatory cup of joe, and hitting a few practice balls before breakfast. I don’t know about you, but I would love to do that.

Dormie House and The Big House at Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club are two excellent options for group accommodations, as are Black Bear Ridge Golf Resort’s Wallace House and Carter House. I’ve been inside all four of these accommodations and can guarantee that your group will be very comfortable and have a great time at any one of them.

Number Two: Pick the Golf Courses and Book Your Tee Times

The golf courses that you add to your itinerary will more than likely be determined by the skill levels of group members. There is no sense playing the toughest courses in the area if you are planning a two-or four-person scramble with lots of rookie golfers in your group.

Pick a course that is less challenging or move up to the shorter tee blocks. Your group will be much more comfortable and will have a much better golf experience.

Number Three: Meal Options

If you are a small group of 2 or 4, finding places to eat will be a breeze.

If you are planning a golf getaway for a group of 8 or more, some pre-planning might be in order.

I did a golf trip to the Pembroke area last summer, and everyone was left on their own to decide where to eat. That works too, but I think that it would be a nice touch to have at least one group meal for all participants of the golf trip.

Number Four: Transportation

If you are planning a regional golf trip that does not involve flying, everyone typically arranges their own transportation. Carpooling with 3 to 4 group members per vehicle is common.

If you are planning any dinners away from your accommodations or if you are planning on staying at the golf course for some beverages after your round, it might be a good idea to provide group members hired transportation to and from the golf course from your accommodation.

If you are only able to play on weekends, you will pay top dollar for green fees, and your accommodation might be more expensive, and availability will be lower.

And don’t forget the wise proverb, “the early bird gets the worm”. Plan early, and you will be sure to stay where you want and golf when and where you want on your next golf adventure.

Golfing Makes Me Hungry, So I Pack a Lunch

I consider myself a bit of a wrap-master, and I’m not talking about singing. I’m talking about sandwich wraps. Very tasty sandwich wraps, to be precise.

Sandwich Wraps Are So Easy to Make

I hate to admit it, but sometimes the night before a golf game, I will lie in bed and try to recall what is in the refrigerator and wonder, what kind of wrap can I make for tomorrow’s game?

Always Stay Prepared

I always keep tortilla shells on hand during the golf season. The “wrap of the day” will depend on what is in the refrigerator.

To speed the wrap-making process up on golf day, I keep some diced onions, pickles, and tomatoes in the refrigerator. They are great to add to most of the wraps I make.

Top Five Sandwich Wraps for the Golf Course

#1: Steak and Blue Cheese

My absolute fav. No doubt about it. As I stand at the BBQ cooking up a couple of ribeye steaks for dinner, I am licking my chops about the following day’s steak & blue cheese wrap for golf.

Lay your tortilla shell down, spread some mayo on it, throw in some shaved ribeye steak, and sprinkle chunks of blue cheese throughout. I also like to add chopped onion, tomato, and a little lettuce to this wrap.

#2: Roast Turkey and Bacon

It is never a bad day when you are packing a turkey and bacon wrap with your golf gear. All you need is some chopped-up bacon and a few slices of roasted turkey.

With all of my wraps, this one gets the mayo treatment. Add in the two signature ingredients and garnish to taste. I like to add chopped onion, lettuce, tomato, and some thinly sliced pickles.

#3: Ham and Cheese

No magic here. Mayo treatment, ham, shredded cheddar cheese, and whatever extras you have. This wrap also gets the onions, tomato, pickle, and lettuce treatment. If there is leftover Caesar salad in the refrigerator, that goes in and the lettuce stays out. Oh yeah, some XXX Hot Mustard too. Gotta have a little heat to get that extra 10 yards off the tee after getting a few bites of this bad boy into you.

#4: Scrambled Eggs With Cheese

My daughter cannot believe that I eat a cold scrambled egg wrap, but I do, and I love it. I must confess, when I make this wrap for my golf lunch, I have to make two because I eat one of them for breakfast.

Throw your tortilla wrap down, spread the mayo, and scramble two eggs in a small frying pan. When the eggs are starting to solidify, toss in some shredded cheddar cheese and sprinkle in some garlic powder and ground black pepper. Once you add the scrambled eggs and cheese to the tortilla shell, toss in some chopped onion and tomato.

Do you have any leftover strips of bacon in the refrigerator? If you do, throw a couple of them in too. Add some ketchup or hot sauce, and you’re good to go.
